Empties No: 2

Happy Monday All
So I seem to be going through a lot of my products recently.  Which makes me happy that I am using it all up, rather than it gathering dust on the shelf, unloved and neglected.

 Sarah Chapman hydration boaster £57

The older more expensive sister to Hydraluron.   Pretty pricey but, pretty special.   I went through this stuff very quickly in 5 months, but it is really lovely on the skin.  It is the essential step in my morning skin care routine.  In terms of performance I don’t think this does a better job than Hydraluron, however I prefer it simply because of the experience.   Both products deliver the same results however Sarah Chapman smells nicer and doesn’t dry out on the skin as soon as you apply it.   However it is eye-watering expensive so I will just be sticking with Hydraluron from now on.

Sarah Chapman Overnight facial £45

This is like every single facial oil that I own added together in one bottle.   I like the smell, I don’t really enjoy the greasy feel when you apply it, but I love the results the morning after.   This is the stuff that makes you look like you  have had a good nights sleep even if you have been up since 2 in the morning listening to the neighbours argue.   Like the Hydrating boaster, this is another very good product.  However I only owned this for a couple of months (5) before it ran out, so in terms of cost per use, I really cannot afford to keep buying this twice a year.

Porefessional by Benefit £24

One of the best primers I have come across.  It does feel very slippy and silicon-y however as a very greasy faced individual I find it works really well for me.   Paired with most BB creams and foundations it works really well.  I had this tube for about a 18 months before finishing this.  So in terms of cost and usage it really lasted a long time.

Tocca Guiletta £54

One of my signature scents and favourite perfume.  This is a very delicate flora perfume which has Ylang ylang, rose, lily of the valley and apple.   It’s one of those scents which is very hard to place which floral is dominate, but somehow just works with everything going on.  Tocca do some really brilliant perfumes, that are pretty unique.

Clarins Brightening Toner £25

This was my exfoliating toner which I used instead of the Pixi glow tonic.  This is a good acid based toner which brightens the skin by chemically sloughing off the dead skin cells.  This is another Caroline Hirons recommendation.  Its good and if I can’t find the Pixi tonic again I would definitely get this.  They are one and same, however the glow tonic is cheaper.   Due to the price point I will be going for Pixi if I can get my hands on it.

By Terry Concealer touch expert £32

This is one of my favourite under eye concealer.  This is very opaque but a very light texture.  So it is very good at covering dark circles without clogging in fine lines under the eye.  I finished about a month ago, and wasn’t going to repurchase this.   However I found that I missed it a lot on a day to day basis that I got another one.   This does last for a long time considering I first got this in April last year, and pretty much use it every day.  If you are looking for a nice light but strong concealer from a pen dispenser try this out.   The colour range is pretty good as well as I find the colour of this matches my-hard-to-match skin tone already.

What have you finished up this month?  Any more repurchases?

Summer footwear

Not sure about you folks but I really do struggle with summer footwear. I do so enjoy going into office or dune and looking at all the pretty summer sandals.  I like them all, gladiators, embellished, wedges, and the plan ugly orthopaedic sandal that seems to be in fashion now.

However what stops me from buying is after years and years of buying a new summery sandal, I always find that they rub and blister me to death.  By the end of the summer when I do my bi-annual closet cull they are relegated to the charity shop.
What do I always reach for year after year are three staple shoes.

Birkenstocks

I have been wearing these for years and I have three pairs in different colours but the black version are my favourite.  Not the prettiest sandal out there but definitely the most comfortable.

Toms

Buy one and give one the ethical choice for a summer slip on.  Really comfortable, affordable and come in a multitude of colours and textures.

Havianas flip flops

The only rubber flip flop I buy.  I have had this particular pair since 2004 and the sole is nearly paper thin.   If you are ever in brazil load up on these are they are cheaper there than they are here.

What are your summer footwear staples?

Wardrobe rules after you are 30….rules what rules?

So I am 31, thought I would put it out there..........

I am interested in this topic because of my age, and also because I feel like I still haven’t reached that age where I should be dressing a certain way for my age.  I can dress like a lady, but I also like to dress like a teenage boy as well much to the dismay of my mother and husband.  This is something I researched on before posting about it.  By research I mean I googled to death.  What I found is that there are more wardrobe rules advice for men past 30, than there are for women past 30.  I am happy to see in this instance that blog posts for dressing after 30 for women, are phrased in a more passive way.  As in : ‘Dressing appropriately for your age.’  Or ‘What to let go when you reach 30.’   I was glad to see no one laying down the law of the land.  Although I know that is what people used to do 40 -50 years ago.

However there are few things that I have seen which prompted me to write this blog post and which I totally retaliate against.

1.      No Converse past the age of 25.  I read this ‘pearl of wisdom’ from “Paris Street Style” written by a bunch of girls who haven’t had a decent meal since 1998.   Don’t get me wrong it is a fantastic book, and I have gleaned a lot of ideas from it.  But no Converse?  Ever again?  Are you kidding me? What are we meant to chase our kids in pray, tell?  Five inch heels Christian Louboutins?  I have going to put this maxim firmly in the ‘wot-ever’ basket and torch it immediately.  For my wedding I had two pair of shoes.  One were these and the other were these.

2.     Short shorts, mini-skirts.  This isn’t really a bone of contention with me as even at my lightest/skinniest I just didn’t have the legs for shorts/skirts anyway.  However I do believe in the miracle of the opaque tights so I say if you have the legs go for it. But follow that rule of low top or high hemline, never both.  Some rules are sacred.

3.      Long hair as you get older.  When I give birth to some sproglets I will probably shear off all my hair, and probably do it myself too.  If you have ever held a baby for any length of time you will know about their love of grabbing a fistful of hair.   So while I am childless I intend to grown my hair as long as possible and see how far I can get.   It’s a science experiment I tell my Mum whenever she nags me to get my hair cut.

4.      Natural hair colours.  Sorry too late already dyed it fun colour when I was meant to be revising a couple of months ago.  Not sure about pink or green, but blue and purple are my jam.

5.       No crop tops, the nearest thing that I own to a crop top is this and it is a bit on the short side.  You can own a crop top if you layer it over a dress or a tank top which is what I do.

Generally a lot of the rules were made up with matron-like-people who dictated them to others who started following them.  However it is always good to consider what works for one person may not work for you *.  So at the end of the day do what you want.

*I think for me I have never had a complete killer body so I have never dressed with a bunch of skin on show, with the exception of bikini, etc.  Rule of thumb is if you can dance, run and climb trees in it without flashing someone you’re good to go.

Any other dressing rules over 30?  Have you given up certain things because you couldn’t get away with them or are you still rocking them?

20-ish MORE things you learn for running/training and finishing a halfmarathon. –AKA my after thoughts on Hackney Run.

1.       The night before the big race your feet and toenails suddenly become very important.  Long toenails + swelled up feet from running = nails cutting into feet.  Make sure you nails aren’t cut too straight otherwise your toe and neighbouring toes will be torn to shreds.   Address any other blisters etc which may cause you discomfort on the day.

2.       Looking at the line for the loos about 400 yards off and going for a good old fashioned wee in the bushes.  I really can’t be dealing with loo queue pre-race.  Life is too short and I really couldn’t give a monkeys if people see me.

3.       Chub-rub if your thighs are bit over friendly with each other by design or too much chocolate (hey some people just have big thighs ok.) smother yourself in Vaseline/anti chaff gel, or cut the drama and just get some compression capris/tights.

4.       Or run to the nearest ambulance and beg for Vaseline, and have everyone watch you grease yourself up on the side of the road, thighs and chest area = Awkward.

5.       Train for a half marathon.  I am always amazed at people who don’t train for a half marathon, and rock up on the day wet behind the ears.  You can usually spot them pre-race, they are the people in fashion trainers and cotton clothing.  I actually eavesdropped on a conversation between a bunch of these before the race.

How fast do you run a half marathon, I mean what pace do I go at?”

“Fast. No walking, no stopping”

“What’s the longest you have ever run in one go?”

“About five miles”

Needless to say into mile 3, I saw the same bunch of people drop out and walk back to the start line not looking at anyone in the eye, shame faced.

6.       A good tune-age on the earphones can really uplift your mood when you are starting to flag.  Daft punk, Fat boy slim, Tiesto et al can really get you pumped up to run again.

7.       Interact with the crowd cheering for you, if someone claps/cheers for you wave at them.  If a little kid wants a high five give them a high five.  Spectators really are fantastic, use their enthusiasm to push you on.  During the Hackney run I was astounded at the kindness of the people of Hackney.  Several people thought to hand out ice cold water from their homes, a couple of people where hosing people down with water from their front gardens.  Which in 26 degree heat and running for 1 hour is pure HEAVEN.  I don’t think I could have finished the race without them.  People of Hackney you are truly awesome thank you.

8.       Learn to run in the heat, it’s a lot harder than you think.  I saw double the amount of people passed out on the side of the road.  The heat will really kick you in the gut if you don’t respect it.

9.       SPF the higher the better and sweat proof.  Apply it all day, every day, EVERY DANG DAY people.  Even when you aren’t running.  SPF you need it work it in your skincare routine.

10.   Who are all these women in full make up for a half marathon?  Seriously?  What is the point you are just going to sweat it all off, and get spots as well?

11.   I love to run in the summer, as I breathe through my mouth which cuts down the hay fever.  It’s almost worth the exhaustion to be sneeze free for an hour or two.

12.   Don’t chug down the energy drink/water, sip it a bit at the time, or be that person puking up on the side of the road.

13.   Hydration is really important.   The organisers at Hackney run kept on telling us at the start to ‘Only drink if we needed to’ I think they were warning us already they didn’t order enough water for the event.   Which is what happened to me at mile 6 water station.  Which is completely dangerous and irresponsible, and is what contributed to more people passed out on the side of the road.

14.   I am really sorry to the girl next to me who I accidently spat out all my water on.  Those water packets are really hard to figure out either too much water or not enough, I much prefer a bottle.

15.   Route is so important for training and a half marathon.  Hackney Run was not really a looker the first 6 miles.  The main attraction drawing me in this race was the Olympic park which wasn’t really well routed out, just the queue type running in a loop.  (a bit how like you queue for a ride in Disney land) Also there was a lot of that loop running on dual carriages.  Not quite the Olympic experience I was hoping for.

16.   Milk-maid braids really are the best hair style for running.  No hair touching sweaty shoulders or neck is amazing.

17.   The last mile was the longest mile by far, and seeing the largest amount of people dropping out just before the finishing line is the biggest enabler to make sure the YOU finish yourself.  (i.e take it easy don’t puff yourself out so you can finish)

18.   I rather enjoyed stinking out the Jubilee line on the way home.  Normally I am the first person to complain about smells on public transport, but in this instance I felt justified.  To the snotty girl who commented about the carriage smelling of BO.  It was me and the 10 other people who had just run 13.1miles in 26 degree heat.  Deal with it princess.

19.   Being able to consume as much roast chicken/chocolate/wine as I physically can post-race and not feeling a bit guilty.

20.   Feeling incredibly sore all over afterwards and standing in a ice cold shower.   The pain is quite exquisite, but you know you are going to suffer even more tomorrow.

Thank you for reading, please do share any lovely running stories you may have.  I am always interested to hear them.

Stopping the deja vu shopping.....

Over and over and over like a monkey with a miniature cymbals………..

Do you ever find yourself in a buying rut.  Do you have to catch ‘em all even though you own something similar already?  Hello my friend and welcome to my world.

I had a good clear out of my make up drawers the other day and came across the same lip products in similar colours.  I also own a lot of mac lipsticks but, I am happy to say the shade for each are pretty distinct.   With my Fresh, Lipstick queen and Glossy stick collection I came across similar colours in each group.   Which shocked me, as had always thought I had a good varied collection.  Clearly I had been kidding myself.

I have certain colours that I gravitate towards.  Pinks and berry reds are high on my list.  The trouble with this is I forget that I have a certain colour in my possession and go out and purchase something in a similar colour.

This isn’t the first time I have come across this in my beauty purchases, I currently have 8 barbie pink nail polish colours which really aren’t that dissimilar from each other.  I am currently in the process of trying to cut it down and give some bottles away.   The only one that I use all the time is watermelon by Essie so the other 7 are a bit redundant.

This kind of spending needs to stop in my life, I am happy to re-purchase something if I love it.  But really how many berry toned and pink lipsticks does one girl need?  Not as many as I have is the answer.   One of the things that I am trying to employ now is to wait 24 hours before purchasing something.  That way I can check if I have something similar rather than buy the same again.   Another trick is to read up reviews on something as well, is it going to be worth spending your money?
What do you buy multiples of over and over again?  I surely can’t be the only one buying the same thing all the time?
Do you have any tips to prevent deja vu spending?

20-ish things that happening training, running and finishing a HalfMarathon

 * In not any order because I am dyslexic and dyspraxia.

1.       You suddenly develop a lifelong attachment to running socks.  If they go missing your mourn their loss, and curse the fact you have go and buy new ones. *the good ones ain’t cheap BTW.

2.       The emotional wall at mile 11 race day when you wonder ‘why THE EF am I doing this half marathon, WHY GOD WHY?!!!’.  You start to question your ability to finish the race, because the doggedness to just put one foot in front of another, is starting to wear thin.  This is the point where you start to dig deep and force your brain to deceive your body.  This is where you employ what I like to call the ‘lying game’.  Look at the landmarks and promise your body you are just going to run to that lamppost and then you can rest, just keep running to the bin and your can rest, just keep running to the finish line and you can rest.

3.       The emotional release and/or high that happens when you finish at mile 13.1  Warning you will probably burst into to tears.  Don’t worry I have seen hardened marathon runners do this year after year.  It’s a normal thing. (Apparently…..if you count only crying in life after you have run 13 miles or 26 miles.)

4.       You will always remember how the first five miles of a race you hardly feel, and yet when you train it’s always a sodding slog.

5.       Although if you can find a running route that is pretty it makes the run more of a ride, than a slog.

6.       On ‘map my run’ there are a number of dodgey/crazy routes that I wouldn’t walk with a group of people let alone run in the early evening.  Be aware of your surroundings and be safe.

7.       Soon your clothing style will slowing revert to Sweaty Betty, Nike, Adidas clothing et al.  Insert your favourite sports brand here and see yourself wearing it to the pub all the time, much to the amusement of your friends and other half.

8.       You will develop an unhealthy relationship with your sports bra dependent on cup size.  If you are small you won’t give a monkeys and own only one.  if you are larger you will have several in varying levels of support worn on a sliding scale of what time of the month it is.

9.       Don’t be that person who insists on starting right at the front of the race.  That is unless you are a club runner or Mo Farah.  Every single race I enter I see one person who pushes their way to the front only to start walking by mile 1 in abject humiliation. You don’t want to be that person, it totally screws with your mental game.  Running in a group in such a tight setting will make you go faster than you are capable of, if you puff yourself out at the start your really aren’t doing yourself any favours.   I am not the slowest person but I am not the fastest but I ALWAYS start off at the back.  Passing people in a race is much more confidence boosting than hundreds of people passing you.

10.   Also it will probably be 15mins in the race by the time you cross the start line, if you can catch up with a pace-maker at 2 hours 15 you know that you are running at a pace of 2hours completion time.  Your time does not start until you cross the start line so don’t worry about the added time.  Make it work for you!

11.   Suddenly all your cotton yoga and work out gear becomes enemy number one.  Why?  Once you start running long distance your clothes get sodden with your sweat.  After a couple of miles this will start to chaff in areas you didn’t think were possible, NICE.  Get some sweat wicking fabric and resign the yoga clothes to yoga or chocolate eating only.

12.   You will forget how scary a 5k is to non-runners.  It’s just three miles people.

13.   HILLS! Hills are evil, hills are torture.  Come race day, hills are your friends as you know how to make them work to your advantage.  Find one in your local area and try and conquer that bar steward.   Slow and steady upwards, fast as possible downwards for the most energy efficiency.

14.   Lip balm carry some with you, your mouth is going to get very dry running around.

15.   Same goes for tissues, nothing worse than sniffling while running.

16.   Don’t be afraid of the walk, if you need to take a break walk it out for a bit, rather than damage yourself permanently.  Runners are really a gun-ho lot with their body.

17.   If you feel any pain in the joints or knee please for the love you God, STOP.  Just stop, you can really damage yourself if you don’t look after your knees.   I see those runners with knee and ankle supports on both legs and I just wonder at what threshold of pain do they need to get before they stop.  You can put yourself in the position where you can’t walk let along run again.  Look after yourself people.

18.   Stretch all the time. Esp. your calves. This is something that I am guilty of, but my Husband recommends you stretch every time you wee.  Not while you wee, after obviously unless you have a bladder of steel then snaps to you.

19.    Before you do a race, some person who has run the race before you will tell you that there is a ‘MASSIVE’ hill upwards right at the end.  You will start the race and spend most of it worrying about said ‘hill’.  Only to find out the hill was the one that you climbed at mile 3.  Thanks Colin Graham, totally going to get you next time.  “Hmmm Yes Edinburgh Marathon, right at the end they release the zombies to chase you over the finishing line”

20.   No, no, sadly Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston et al will not be naked and greeting you at the finishing line.   No matter how much you believe…………… (Carrie cries)

21.   Rather surprisingly people will try and downplay your achievement.  Usually these people are non-runners.  Who are secretly jealous that you have done what you said you would do.  This actually happened between myself and my husband after I finished my first half marathon.  He started to tease me about my finish time, and make comments about how cycling is ‘so much harder’ than running.  It still stings a little remembering it now.  After a blazing row that lasted for 20mins, (directly after running 13miles) I suddenly guessed the source of the teasing, he was jealous.  I said as much and he did apologise, and admit he was jealous.

22.   A large part of you income will be dedicated to paying for upcoming races.

23.   A large part of your time will be dedicated to scheduling in races during the year.  Race for Life is excellent for doing 5k and 10k during the summer.

24.   If you are serious about getting a good time you should cut the booze a good month before the race.  I would like to say I have NEVER been able to do this, but I am told it does help a lot.

25.   Nice running gear is a good way to encourage you to go out and run.  I am in love with sweaty betty patterned running tights.  They are literally the most beautiful things I own.

Thank you for reading, would love to hear any tips you may have?

Sephora Haul and cheeky off duty Shopping.

Sephora haul and cheeky off duty shopping

So last April I went away for a week to New York with my husband.  We stayed with some good friends of ours, and had a leisurely week eating and shopping.  I also managed to put on 7 pounds in 7 days, something to do with having 5 meals a day I think.  I haven’t put in prices for items because, rather stupidly I have binned the receipts and it was over two months ago so really cannot remember.

I didn’t buy anything clothing wise, but my husband did allow me to go mad in Sephora, which was nice of him.  We were going to buy a Rebecca Minkoff MAC bag for a birthday present for me.  However when I went into Barneys I was assaulted with too many choices, I settled on three but then couldn’t choose a contender.  We then walked out empty handed.  I guess you get an idea of something you want in your head, but when given the opportunity to buy it loses its appeal.  Oh well. What I did bring home was the following:

Clinique palette.

I can’t remember the name of the palette, but I managed to snag this wandering past duty free.  I was on holiday and I was feeling spendy, but yes yet ANOTHER palette to add to my ever growing collection.  It contains a multitude of nudey-neutral colours and is perfect for travel.   I have been using this quite a lot recently because it is so user friendly.  It’s the kind of no brainer eye shadow, connect the dots and off you go to work.  Perfect for those mornings when I really don't have a preference for what I plonk on my face.   I’ve never owned eye shadows from Clinique before so I was really impressed by how good the formula was.

Josie Malan Glee blusher in runway red.
I have heard a lot about this blusher from last year. With various BBloggers raving about it. The irritating thing is that it’s not available in the UK, except via the Sephora website.  I waited a year to get it from the states in person, and it is lovely.  It lasts ages, maybe not the full 14hours it claims but a good 8 which in my book is good enough.  It is a lovely blush to wear all year round, and I have quite a few compliments wearing it.

Roller ball Perfume in Pure Grace.
One of favourite perfumes, which smells like freshly cleaned clothes.  Weird I know, but I love it. Sometimes I just want a scent that isn’t complicated, so no musk, no florals.  Wish they would sell these rollerballs in the UK.  Carrying a big bottle of perfume with me is just not an option. Travalos are good idea but once you have put one perfume in one you can’t switch and put another perfume in it.

Fresh tinted lip balm treatment in Rose
I try and buy these in the states because they are SO expensive in the UK.  I think this is the fourth colour I have in these.  These are very moisturising and give a little hint of colour that makes you look a bit more done.   It’s not full on lipstick, but it not just lip balm, it is a diluted version of both in one.  These are good for days when you can't be bothered to commit to full lipstick, but still want a wash of colour.

Make up brush cleaner
I know these are sold in Selfridges, but I just keep forgetting to pick on up when I am there.  Which is not often now that I am trying to be good with my money.  This cuts down the cleaning brush time, and bizarrely makes the brushes dry a lot quicker as well.

Hairbands
Some fun hairbands.  Heard a lot about these tie hairbands.  They are excellent, will definitely be getting some more like this soon.  They don’t snag or pull on the hair.  They also make the perfect messy top knot with zero effort.

Sephora has recently started to ship to the UK, although there are restrictions on liquids and some gels so please bear that in mind. Have you tried to order from Sephora yet?

Thanks for reading.
